There have been a number of conservation commitments over the past couple of years as nations around the world have agreed to protect 30 per cent of lands and waters by 2030. The federal government, province and First Nations’ leadership organizations announced the Tripartite Framework Agreement on Nature Conservation that came with funding commitments and a pathway to nearly double B.C.’s protected areas.
We need to halt and reverse biodiversity loss
In order to further protect biodiversity, we literally need every tool in the toolbox. There are some hopeful steps forward with Indigenous-led conservation announcements, provincial commitments to modernize land use planning and watershed security strategies. Northern Confluence helps support these as well as advocates for the use and implementation of some untested and potentially valuable legislative mechanisms to achieve conservation objectives at provincial and federal levels.
